The Hockey Community is mourning the loss of former National Champion, Randy Ward, who tragically passed away at 78, as Ward played for the Denver Pioneers during his hockey career.
The University of Denver has announced the passing of former Pioneer defenseman Randy Ward at the age of 78. Ward's passing occurred on May 9th, 2025.
Ward, originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, suited up for the
Denver Pioneers from 1966 to 1969.
He'd help the Pioneers achieve back-to-back championships in his final two seasons with the squad in 1968 over North Dakota (4-0) in Minnesota, and Cornell (1969) with a 4-3 win in Colorado Springs.
During his hockey career, the Alberta native suited up for the Pioneers with a total of 84 games played, scoring 46 points (12 goals, 34 assists).
Ward didn't just enjoy hockey, he also loved the outdoors and farming. He was a cattle rancher, an avid golfer, and engaged in hunts all across the continent of North America.
Ward leaves behind wife Marilyn, sons Jeff and Andrew, and four grandchildren, Kalen & Kierra, and Declan & Liam. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Nita Burdon, Judith Paquet, and his nieces and nephews.
