Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns faces long-term suspension after headbutting Timo Meier
Burns may be one of the smartest long-lasting veterans in the NHL, but clearly not when it comes to on-ice altercations, as he found himself in hot water Tuesday night during a scrum at the end of the second period.
The 40-year old defenseman decided to use his head in an interesting way during a scrum against
New Jersey Devils'
Timo Meier, which will ultimately result in a punishment for Burns being announced today.
In the NHL, headbutting is a serious infraction resulting in a major penalty and a game misconduct. It can also lead to a match penalty for reckless endangerment if the action is done with a high degree of violence or injury occurs.
Neither was assesed to Burns nor a penalty at all, but after further review we can certainly expect the minimum punishment of a fine to be dealt to the Canes defenseman.
It's shocking that the referees missed the headbutt, which is likely to result in a suspension but sadly couldn't fetch the New Jersey Devils a two minute powerplay on the ice.
If a match penalty were to be handed out for headbutting, it automatically results in a minimum three-game suspension by the NHL.
This is just one of several close storylines to keep an eye out throughout this Devils vs Hurricanes series early on.
