The NHL has been changing so much over the last decade, for example the salary cap in 2005 was at a large amount of $39 million dollars of cap space per team, fast forwarding to 2022 and the leagues cap hit is now at a high of $82.5 million dollars per team, per season. Gary Bettman and other NHL insiders also have stated that the cap space each team is given will only be going up, and at the rate it has it has gone up a average of 2.5 million per season, meaning in just a few years the cap space could reach over 102.5 million, PER TEAM!
For comparison, Wayne Gretzky was paid 5 million per season on a 3 year contract that he signed with the Edmonton Oilers.. in todays game, we have Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars who is making nearly triple that in just one season, at $13 million.
