Hawks vs. Flyers, in Philadelphia. Hawks win, 4-1. Three against a goalie, and one EN. Was that tonight's game, or November 9, 1996? Easily could have been either.
Tonight marked the first time since that game that Chicago was able to beat Philadelphia in the regular season in their home arena. And they did it in a strikingly similar fashion.
Slight differences being that in 1996, Chicago got the lead, early, and held it for the entire game. Tonight, the Flyers were on the board, first, and the Blackhawks thought they tied it in the first, but Athanasiou's breakaway goal was overturned, and 20 minutes of hockey ended with the Hawks down 1-0. However, that one goal was all the Flyers got, as Toews, Reese Johnson, Tyler Johnson, and Kurashev took over the scoring for the rest of the night.
And you might be familiar with some of the names from the '96 game as well. Goal scorers for the Blackhawks were Gary Suter (assisted by Chris Chelios and Alex Zhamov), Eric Daze, Murray Craven, and Tony Amonte with the EN. The first 3 goals were against Garth Snow, who was replaced by Ron Hextall. Hextall played just over 24 minutes, and made 6 saves on 6 shots. Jeff Hackett was in net for the Hawks, and made 33 saves on 34 shots, with a .971 SV%. Fast forward 26+ years, and you have
Petr Mrazek making 37/38 saves for a SV% of .974.
