Connor Bedard's inspiring story that has just broke the news
With the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery looming, all eyes are on projected first-overall pick Connor Bedard. The 17-year-old has already made hockey history by being the first player to earn exceptional status in the Western Hockey League. Bedard scored a whopping 43 goals and 84 points in just 36 games, playing for West Van Academy Prep's U18 team League and earned MVP honors at only 14 years old. He has continued to impress throughout his season with the Regina Pats, racking up 71 goals and 72 assists in just 57 games.
But Bedard's inspiring story goes beyond the ice. Dan Robson of The Athletic recently published a moving article on the deep loss that drives the young phenom. Bedard is motivated to play for his grandfather, Garth, who tragically passed away in a car accident caused by an impaired driver. Bedard's family and the Pats' front office kept the news from him so he could play in a game, where he scored two goals and added two assists, earning first star honors. It was only after the game that Bedard was told about his grandfather's passing.
Bedard's response to the devastating news shows the depth of his character. "Grandpa would want me to play," he said. Three nights later, Bedard scored an overtime goal to beat the division-leading Brandon Wheat Kings, dedicating the win to his grandfather. "He's definitely who I play for now and will for the rest of my life," Bedard said.
While Bedard's hockey skills are impressive, it's his heart and determination that make him a true star. Grandpa Garth may no longer be with us, but there is no doubt that he will be watching proudly as Bedard continues to chase his dreams.
