Former Chicago Blackhawks legend, and current Detroit Red Wings forward, Patrick Kane could remain in Hockeytown, if what GM Steve Yzerman says is true.
It looks like
Patrick Kane has settled on Detroit as his new home. After two seasons in Detroit we've seen Showtime return to form, as this season he'd score 59 points (21 goals 38 assists) in 72 games.
His one-year, $4.0 million contract, loaded with a plethora of bonuses, expires at the end of this season. Just shy of the $750K needed to capture the $2.5 million total, he earned $5.75 million in total this year, as opposed to $6.5 million.
As
Patrick Kane approaches free agency, you'd think he'd want to play on a contending team's NHL roster. Everything is not as it seems. He is intent on returning to Hockeytown to play for the Red Wings for a third year.
While negotiations haven't begun, there's interest there, according to GM Steve Yzerman.
«We had a brief discussion in our meeting,» Yzerman said. «We would preferably try to get some things in place, if we can, early. If not, we'll figure out something down the road.
«But there's strong mutual interest on both parties. I know Patrick had suggested it in his time up here with the media. I'm optimistic.»
Kane showed up on the ice where many failed to do in Detroit, ranked fourth in scoring amongst all Red Wings forwards.
He'd tie in third for assists, all this despite being injured for part of the season.
Yzerman believes that Kane has been an asset for the Red Wings, and he's one of the only reliable forwards in the lineup aside from
Dylan Larkin,
Alex DeBrincat, and newly minted rookie
Marco Kasper.
Kane deserves a raise, and will the Detroit Red Wings be able to give him one?
Showtime has played 1,302 total NHL games, with 1,343 points scored (492 goals, 851 assists) split between the Red Wings, Rangers, and Blackhawks.
As an American-born forward he's ranked third-all time in points.
