The Blackhawks have a big night coming up, as the NHL Draft Lottery is right around the corner. They have a 13.5 percent chance to land the first overall pick, the second-best odds, as the San Jose Sharks have a 25 percent chance, which is the overall best odds.

But, do the Blackhawks even want to snag the first pick? Think about it- the best player available is a defenseman, Matthew Schaefer. Plus, there's Gavin McKenna, who had well over 100 points, who is the best overall player in next year's draft. If you get the first overall pick this year, you can't move up the next two years, and you can't get the first pick next year, so second pick might be the best case scenario.
So, that leads to the next question: what should the Blackhawks do if they get the first overall pick?
Well, you could just take Schaefer. However, you have six solid, young defenseman already, either in the system or already in the NHL. You don't necessarily need Schaefer, but if they decide to draft him, he'd automatically be the future #1 defenseman, even over Artyom Levshunov. If Kyle decides to take Matthew, they might look into trading Kevin Korchinski, because he's been very up and down.
Another option would be trading down. Trading down is more common in the NFL; you barely see teams do it in the NHL, if not at all. However, if a team really wants Schaefer and is willing to give up a couple boat loads, why not? Trade down to no less than fifth overall and see where everything lands from there, and you can always trade right back up with the possible newly acquired assets.
The third option would be just taking Michael Misa. Misa is the young, drafted forward needed to complete the whole forward debacle, without any other possible free agent additions. Misa had an incredible goal a couple days ago when he flipped the puck behind his back to himself and sniped it home- how does Chicago look at that and not want that paired with Bedard or on the line behind him?
Misa would move waters if the Blackhawks get him, and would still be worthy of a first overall selection, even if Schaefer is there, and would fit the Hawks needs more.
