Former Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith, who won 3 Stanley Cups with Jonathan Toews, discusses his old teammate's attempted return to the NHL.
He hasn't played since April 2023, not long after he was informed by Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson that the team was turning the page on his time with the club and would not be extending his contract.
Toews has suffered from symptoms of Long COVID along with a diagnosis in 2021 of chronic immune response syndrome (CIRS), causing him to miss the entire 2020-21 season.
Toews' former Blackhawks teammate Duncan Keith recently sat down and expressed his belief that the comeback attempt would be successful and that Toews can accomplish whatever he sets his mind to.
I am sure that he can come back and he can be successful. I think so. Anything he puts his mind to, he can do. The time off is a tough thing. He keeps himself in shape. He will put the work in. That's not a question. He has great hockey sense. I'm excited to see what's going to happen and where he's going to end up. I am excited to watch him.
Toews said recently that he didn't like how his tenure in Chicago came to a close and he wants to prove that he has more left within himself to play at the NHL level. He's been linked not only to his hometown Winnipeg Jets, but also to the Anaheim Ducks, who are now coached by former Blackhawks bench boss Joel Quenneville.
While Toews won't have to wait long after his NHL career officially ends to have his No. 19 sweater in the rafters of United Center, he's not ready to call it quits just yet.
