In a stunning twist, several Chicago Blackhawks reporters admitted on X platform that they may watch Blackhawks games through illegal streams as the Blackhawks had made it virtually impossible for fans to watch their games.
Engaging in or facilitating illegal live streaming is not a minor infraction-it's a direct violation of copyright laws that can lead to hefty fines and, in some cases, criminal charges. For viewers, penalties can range up to $30,000 for accessing pirated live content.
The exchange took place between Ben Pope and Jake DeMatteo who are commenting on how strong the anger has been between Blackhawks fans and the organization as recent blackouts have made it virtually impossible to watch their beloved team. Both reporters mentioned the streameast platform as a possible solution however it appears to be an off comment.
Regional blackouts have gone hand in hand with NHL teams ever since the NHL adopted their first TV deal. The notion is fans who live within a certain range of their local NHL sports team should attend the game in person and not watch it on television. There have been some discrepancies with this blackout as many fans on the outside of the Blackhawks region cannot see games as well.
Illegal streaming apps break copyright laws by distributing copyrighted content without permission from the rights holder. This includes streaming movies, TV shows, and live sports events without obtaining the proper licenses or rights to do so.
With many families having financial hardship throughout North America, attending games in person can be virtually impossible which has led fans to look at alternatives to watching their games and cheering on their team. It's been a belief of mine for many years that the NHL should remove all blackouts throughout the entire sport and follow a more inclusive style like the NFL has done which has seen their numbers grow exponentially over the past number of years.
It's expected bet fans will continue to voice their anger especially if the Blackhawks become competitive and continuously compete for a playoff spot in the next few years.
It remains to be seen on whether the NHL will ever change their policy, but one thing is for certain fans will do whatever they need to do to watch their Blackhawks.
