Chicago Blackhawks make controversial decision to healthy scratch 800-game veteran and it's a terrible look
The Chicago Blackhawks are sending a bold message to their roster of no matter who you are, if you're not playing well you'll be removed from the lineup, as the team has decided to scratch a longtime NHL veteran against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
Interim head coach Anders Sorensen has completed plenty of lineup moves this off-season, including dishing 19-year-old
Connor Bedard new linemates on a nightly basis, providing zero structure to the young Blackhawks roster.
A move announced by Sorensen on Tuesday may be his most controversial one of the season, and it's involving an NHL veteran of 846 games.
This is the second game in a row Maroon has been healthy scratched, and the Blackhawks have only five games remaining in the season before it's over.
"I'm just going to finish this year like every game is my last game, you know, I'm going to play as hard as I can,"
Said Maroon when announcing his retirement on March 22.
It appears Maroon should've expected an early retirement, with the head-scratching move by the Blackhawks coaching staff to have him present at practice for the rest of the season but not in the gameday lineup.
Blackhawks lineup in Pittsburgh:
Donato-Bedard-Mikheyev
Teravainen-Nazar-Bertuzzi
Slaggert-Moore-Kurashev
Reichel-Veleno-Foligno
Vlasic-Rinzel
Korchinski-Murphy
Kaiser-Levshunov
Knight
Soderblom
Extras: Maroon, Crevier, Del Mastro
Not on the ice: Brodie, Martinez (hip)
Maroon's play as of late does not reflect reasoning for his healthy scratching; he has surprisingly impressed since announcing his retirement, tallying up a goal and an assist just one game after making the announcement.
