Alex Ovechkin gave the Chicago Blackhawks team a glimpse of goal-scoring when he buried goal No. 894 on Friday. Despite taking a 5-3 loss, the Blackhawks poured onto the ice to show respects, and we now know what goaltender Spencer Knight said to Ovechkin.
Friday night in Washington DC was quite the learning lesson for
Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks youth as NHL legend
Wayne Gretzky was in attendance to watch the greatest goal scorer of the current generation possibly break his goal record.
Although the record was not broken, it was indeed tied in typical old-school Ovi fashion in his one timer spot on the powerplay.
Which later on lead to the Blackhawks having an empty net, in hopes to comeback in the game. Ovechkin would ultimately end up
passing on an empty net opportunity by declining head coach Spencer Carbery's ask on if he wanted to go on the ice.
Ovechkin did agree to head out in the final minutes of the third period when goaltender Spencer Knight returned in the Chicago crease, where he stopped a few shots from the 'Great 8', who was looking to score goal 895 and break Gretzky's record.
Blackhawks team pours onto ice to congratulate Ovechkin on goal 894
The Blackhawks pulled off a respectful move by taking their gloves off and lining up at center ice to congratulate the Washington Capitals forward.
Fans did take note that goaltender Spencer Knight had a lengthy convo with Ovechkin, the longest out of any Blackhawk.
But what did the 23-year old netminder have to say?
All praise, and some thankfulness in the funniest way.
«Obviously I gave him congrats and all that. He was like, 'Thanks, brother.' I was like, 'Thank you for not scoring the last one on me!'»
