Chicago Blackhawks delivered stern warning on top free agent target

The Chicago Blackhawks were delivered a stern warning on a potential free agent target linked to the team over the past months.
The Blackhawks could be entering a crucial season of their rebuilding. This summer, if they were to make significant acquisitions, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Hawks finish the year ahead of the 8th spot in their division for the first time in three seasons.
To bring his team on the right path, general manager Kyle Davidson could be interested in acquiring key players in free agency.
Many rumours stated that Toronto Maple Leafs' upcoming free agent Mitch Marner could be looking to sign with another team, and the Hawks are in the derby to get him.
After yet another disappointing playoff exit, Marner could have already played his final game as a member of the Leafs.
During his post-game 7 press conference right after being eliminated, Marner provided valuable insights on his future, when he talked about his time in Toronto in the past tense:
"I don't have any thoughts on that right now. I mean, pretty devastated with what just happened.
Yeah, devastated. I've always enjoyed this team and this city, like I always said.
Playing with Auston, it's been amazing. I mean, everyone on this team, so many skilled guys, but obviously, playing with Auston for the last six, seven years, whatever it's been, it makes the game easy. And you know, he's one of the best for a reason."

While targeting Marner seems like a good idea, a recent report shed light on why the Hawks shouldn't get him.
According to The Hockey News, Marner's playoff results haven't been good enough, and the Hawks should make sure to go after a player able to win in the playoffs.
However, in another market, Marner could thrive in the playoffs as well. And if Marner were to accept a discount to sign in Chicago, there's no doubt that Davidson would consider signing him despite his playoff struggles.
