The Toronto Maple Leafs could be making moves to sign veterans at a value in the postseason.
One of those they're interested in signing, according to NHL Insider Chris Johnston, is
Patrick Kane. Kane's one-year, $4 million contract will expire at the end of the season.
While it's difficult to see him part ways with the Detroit Red Wings and GM Steve Yzerman, he could find a better situation in Toronto, especially if he wants one more cup before he retires.
Kane knows a lot about winning difficult games in the postseason and could be a great leader in the Maple Leafs locker room, which lacks a cohesive identity.
The culture there isn't as strong as we thought, as they were unable to shut the door on the Florida Panthers, and a veteran like Kane could offer some insight on getting past Sasha Barkov and the Cats in Sunrise.
Kane's last contract paid him $4 million, with $2.75 million attached in bonuses this season. While he wasn't able to catch all of that money, he could find a rich contract in Toronto, especially after he upped his production to a total of 59 points (21 goals, 38 assists) in 2024-2025.
If GM Brad Treliving is serious about wiping the slate clean with the Maple Leafs, we could see major pieces move in the offseason.
One of those could be
Mitch Marner, who could test free agency in the summer. Marner's exit would give the team some flexibility, as they recoup the $10.9 million of space claims by the 102-point winger.
For now, we wait to see Kane's next steps in the NHL.
