Blackhawks Complete Transaction: Forward Suddenly Leaves The Organization
The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned AHL affiliate Captain Brett Seney to the Canadian National Team for the Spengler Cup.
The transaction marks the first time Brett Seney will suit up for Team Canada during his hockey career.
A significant step forward for the IceHogs Captain, as he gets to add international play to his resume.
The IceHogs' Captain is in his eighth year of playing professional hockey, and third with the Chicago Blackhawks organization.
Seney was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 2015, and would later make his debut in the AHL with the Binghamton Devils during the 2017-2018 season.
The Spengler Cup is an annual invitational ice hockey tournament held in Davos, Switzerland. First held in 1923, the Spengler Cup is often cited as the oldest invitational ice hockey tournament in the world. The event is hosted by the Swiss team HC Davos and played each year in Davos from 26 December to 31 inclusively. Currently, all games are held at the Eisstadion Davos.
While the IceHogs' Captain will be lacing up the skates at the International level soon, with the world's oldest invitational hockey tournament in Davos, Switzerland, it's been difficult to translate his skills at the NHL level.
Seney would play 51 games with the New Jersey Devils and scored 13 points(5 G, 8 A) during the 2018-2019 season.
After his rookie season, his role would diminish as a result of the implementation of protocols to mitigate covid during the 2019-2020 season. He'd spend only one more year with the Devils organization.
Seney would later sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021, he'd lead the Marlies in scoring and would sign three consecutive one-year deals with the Blackhawks organization soon afterward.
Before turning to the professional ranks, Seney amassed a solid career with the NCAA's Merrimack College scoring 42 goals and 115 points in 139 games. That level of offensive consistency has translated well to the AHL where Seney has collected 97 goals and 274 points in 345 games.
This will be a tournament to remember for Seney as he finally gets to suit up for his home country, in Davos.
