The Leafs have found their new general manager and hired former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving. Treliving has a lot of work to do from getting to know the players to deciding on Auston Matthews and whether to trade Mitch Marner or keep him.
There will be a no-movement clause in Marner's contract after July 1st, which means he will be able to control whether he is traded. The Internet is filled with wild trade rumours during this time of year.
The Full 60 posted a potential trade scenario where the Blackhawks acquire Mitch Marner from the Leafs in exchange for their first round and second round in 2023 which happens to be the 19th pick overall from Tampa along with defenseman Kevin Korchinski goaltender Drew Commesso and defenseman Connor Murphy.
As much as the Blackhawks would love to acquire a talent like Marner, I highly doubt the first trade that Treliving will do for the Maple Leafs will be this one. That's not enough talent to go back to replace 95 to 100-point players per season though it would open up almost $6.6 million in cap space with Murphy's contract coming along.
The Blackhawks do not have the pieces to make such a blockbuster move as they would need to send more to the Maple Leafs for a talent like Marner.
I suspect the Blackhawks will stay the course and use their draft picks to draft players so that they can control their salaries at a much lower level for several years and potentially get major returns in points and potential playoff success.
