Kane vs. Toews: One Stays, One Leaves

By now a large majority of Blackhawks are aware that both Kane and Toews are set to become free agents after the 2022-23 season. There is a possibility that this is the last season for both Kane and Toews in Chicago. However, the more likely scenario would be that one stays for the rebuild and the other heads elsewhere. In a potential ultimatum for the Blackhawks, the Hawks could have to decide between the two, but who stays?

Stays: Patrick Kane. Kane has been an important asset to the Blackhawks since he was drafted by the team. With Kane set to turn 34 years old this upcoming season, he hasn't given the Hawks a reason to move on from him. Last season Kane posted 92 points which is the third highest season point total for him. Having a player that can consistently move the puck and spread it amongst younger players will only help to develop these players' puck skills while increasing their confidence. On top of his still elite scoring, Kane has stayed healthy for much of his career (knock on wood.) Despite what Kane describes as a «nagging injury,» Kane hasn't been a player to miss significant time. Remaining injury free for much of his career should only add longevity to his NHL career.

Leaves: Jonathan Toews. Despite his contributions to the Hawks sustained success in the early 2010s, Toews would be the one to leave if faced with this ultimatum – most likely retirement. Toews has unfortunately been one of those players who has an injury history. Toews has had multiple concussions throughout his career. On top of this, he missed the entire 2020-21 season dealing with «chronic immune response syndrome.» Toews returned for the 2021-22 season, but missed multiple games as he was in concussion protocol. Statistically, Toews had his worst career year during the 2021-22 season, tallying only 37 points. That is a less than ideal number when compared to Kane's 92 points. Toews has also expressed his disinterest in sticking around for the Hawks rebuild whereas Kane has remained more open minded to the idea. Only time will tell what happens with both these players and their futures in Chicago.
